Lower Elementary

Grades 1 - 3

"The secret of good teaching is to regard the child’s intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown, to grow under the heat of flaming imagination. Our aim therefore is not merely to make the child understand and still less force him to memorize, but so to touch his imagination to enthuse him to his innermost core."

- Dr. Maria Montessori

Program highlights for Grades 1-3

The Montessori philosophy of education as well as the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines are followed and implemented.

Lower elementary students in Grades 1-3 use Montessori hands-on materials to build (spell) words with moveable letters, study parts of speech, add, subtract, multiply and divide in the thousands with materials, learn about the world with puzzle maps, and history with timelines. Children further their reading skills quickly with our well laid out Montessori materials for phonetic and later non-phonetic, work. Emphasis on reading comprehension is always stressed.

Mixed-age groupings encourages an organic sense of family and community, while providing mentoring opportunities in which older students help younger students, thereby reinforcing their own skills in the process.  Children at this age demonstrate an intense desire to develop strong connections with peers. They take increasing responsibility for their own conduct in personal relationships, as well as caring for their environment.

Leaders in Technology: our junior elementary students are provided with iPads to use interactively with smart boards at school, and all homework and assignments are conducted through the online medium Google docs.
